Checklist to help you determine if your child should be evaluated

The following is a checklist to help you determine if the child should be evaluated by a fluency specialist.

Instructions: Parents/teachers check any area that applies to the child:

I. Risk Factors

Has the problem persisted longer than 6 months?
Is there a history of stuttering in the family?
Are there parental concerns?
Are the cycles of stuttering longer than the cycles of fluency?

Does the child seem aware, concerned of frustrated with the stuttering?

II. Speech Behavior

Does the child repeat or prolong parts of words?

Does the child appear to strain or struggle while trying to speak?

Does the child stop talking because it is too hard?
Are there any physical behaviors associated with the stuttering (i.e., loss of eye contact, hand, arm, leg or body movements)?
Is the child's speech fragmented, disrupted or tense?

If two or more questions are checked, the child needs to be seen for consultation or evaluation.

Please contact the Center of Stuttering Therapy to schedule a consultation or evaluation.
